Apparently not everyone loves an Oscar winner. Potential Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee openly criticized best actress Oscar winner Natalie Portman, for her out of wedlock pregnancy. Huckabee was a guest on the radio show “The Michael Medved Show” on Monday, only one day after Portman’s big win.
The republican and former Governor of Arkansas stated “People see a Natalie Portman who boasts, ‘We’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ I think it gives a distorted image. It’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-wedlock children.” While the governor makes a valid point, due to Portman’s fame and growing image of America’s sweetheart, he will surely come under harsh criticism for his words.
He went on to say, “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing.” He argues that while actresses and public figures like Natalie Portman make premarital pregnancy seem cute and glamorous, others who try to imitate her choices will not have the same financial opportunities for raising their child, as she does.
Online commenters have already been firing their angry responses, telling Huckabee to “mind his own business.” While his delivery may not have been optimal, on this issue, I have to side with Huckabee.
